Candle Holders

Lighting the Shabbat candles is one of only three required acts of the Jewish woman, making it one of the most important things a woman can do for herself and her family. The reason lies in an understanding of the word “candle”, or “Ner” in Hebrew (made with the letters Nun and Resh). The numerical equivalent of “Ner” is 250, but when there are two candles, this means two Ners, or 500. This corresponds to the phrase in the Torah “Pru Vervu”, meaning “be fruitful and multiply.” Hence, lighting the two candles on Shabbat is how the woman brings down the energy of Shabbat and brings it into her home and to her family. These candleholders are also made of silver, enhancing the Shabbat energy with the energy of Hesed (mercy).

Mezuzah

The Mezuzah is one of the most powerful Jewish tools for protection, specifically designed for safeguarding one’s home. The Mezuzah comes from the story in Exodus in which the Israelites, on their way out from Egypt, pasted goat’s blood on the left side of their doors so as to alert the Angel of Death which homes to pass over (hence the name Passover) during the last plague, the Death of the Firstborn. Of course, at Sgulah, we’re interested in far more than just the literal story of the Torah. It is recommended that every home have at least 2 mezuzahs, or mezuzot (the plural in Hebrew) and the reason becomes clear when analyzing the letters in mezuzot. This word consists of the letters Mem – Zayin – Zayin – Vav – Taf. These letters, in a different order, also spell the words Zaz Mavet, which means “against death.” So the fact that two mezuzot in a home are recommended corresponds directly to the makeup the Hebrew word and the purpose of the mezuzot.
