Symbols of Judaism

This luxury volume is a beautiful and moving visual record of the ancient traditions that form the cornerstones of Jewish existence.

Full-page images of precious religious artefacts such as the Holy Ark and the Sabbath candlesticks, but also holy sites including synagogues and the Mount of Olives, accompany a thought-provoking text by Rabbi Marc-Alain Ouaknin. He provides answers to many fundamental questions about the traditions of Judaism, discussing not only their origins and application today, but also religious holidays and feasts according to the Jewish calendar.

Marc-Alain Ouaknin, a Rabbi and doctor of Philosophy, is Associate Professor at the University of Bar-Ilan in Isarel where he teaches comparative literature. His numerous publications include The Burnt Book, I’ll Tell You a Story, Mysteries of the Alphabet, Mysteries of the Kabbalah, and with Assouline, The Mystery of Numbers (2004), Symbols of Judaism (1995) and Haggadah: The Passover Story (in collaboration with Gérard Garouste, 2001).

Photographer laziz hamani has contributed to a number of books for Assouline, including all the titles in “The Symbols of Religion” series and Le Trésor de Saint-Denis. His work has appeared in many magazines, as well as in a series of solo exhibitions in France and Italy.
